An Introduction to Reiki

July 25, 2018

A few years ago, I got fed up with living in fear, being overwhelmed and mega stressed out. I went on a mission to find my joy and to bring balance into my life.

On the outside, life was pretty amazing! I married my soul-mate and together we have 4 amazing kids. My family means the world to me.

On the inside however, I was feeling a little lost. My past haunted me. My work did not fulfill me.

I desired more for my life and for my family.

You see, I became a Mom at just 17 years young and although becoming a Mom has been my greatest blessing, I had no idea what I wanted for myself. I was so busy doing, doing, doing … I had no idea how to just BE.

I have always wanted to put my families needs ahead of my own, and there is nothing wrong with that, except for when I’d forget to put the oxygen mask on myself. I felt completely exhausted and depleted, unable to give my family the very best of me.

This was long before I became a master of Self-Love and at the time, I was clueless about the concept of self-care.

My childhood traumas would rear their ugly heads from time to time and I often felt like I was carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders.

I so desperately wanted to find some peace.

I’d had enough! I knew I wasn’t being my best self for my family and I certainly wasn’t being true to me, it was driving me crazy!!

And there my healing journey began ….

Being left-brained dominant, I was analytical, into reasoning, planning, and very critical. There was no such thing as ‘Flow’ in my life. I was rigid and fearful.

I didn’t really understand this at time, but a friend mentioned that I needed to utilize more of my right brain.

The right brain is responsible for creativity, emotions, intuition, art, imagination, and visualization. Definitely far from anything that was familiar to me.

So, there I found myself on my computer one Wednesday afternoon, in search of a local art class on Kijiji, something, anything, to activate the right hemisphere of my brain.

While I was scrolling I came across something called Reiki.

Now, at this time, I had no idea what Reiki was. I kept scrolling down. It was strange, but something on the inside kept pulling at me to scroll back up and take a closer look at the Reiki healing Ad.

After the third nudging, I decided to call the number on the screen and booked my first Reiki healing session.

My intuition was guiding me, and I was at a point in my life that I was finally ready to listen.

When I showed up for my first appointment, I was nervous. I had no idea what I was showing up too.

Colleen was amazing. I felt her gentle energy from the first-hand shake and I could see the genuine care in her eyes, it gave me the comfort that I needed to let a little bit of my guard down.

I hopped up onto the Reiki table, lied down, closed my eyes and focused on the relaxing music. Taking this time out for myself from my hectic schedule was a huge step for me and I wanted to make the most of it, even though relaxing was a foreign concept, I settled in ok.

That’s when I felt it. Collen began at my feet, laying her hands above my body. I remember feeling a tingling, warm energy flowing where her hands were raised above. I was fascinated that even though Colleen’s hands were never directly laid on my body, I could feel the strength of the flowing energy.

The most profound healing took place at my heart and my throat, two areas that were most in need of the Reiki healing energy.

Over the years, I had built a fortress around my heart as a form of protection in an effort to stop the pain and anguish that comes with having parents with addictions. I had learned to stuff my emotions at a very young age and to almost never speak my truth.

When the Reiki energy reached my chest, I felt like there was a 100lb brick laying on me, I could barely breath. At my throat, I felt like I was being strangled.

When Colleen was finished the hour-long Reiki treatment, I remember slowly getting up off the table and found my way to her couch. Before I could even muster up the words to ask her what the hell had happened, I began to weep uncontrollably for what felt like a very long time.

Not to scare you, as this is not a reaction that happens to everyone. It is the result of years and years of supressed emotions that finally began to release their grip from me, so the real healing could begin to transpire.

What happened next has been nothing short of a miracle in how my life has been transformed.

When I walked down her steps, I can say with certainty, that my load was a little lighter and has now become almost non-existent since that unforgettable day back in 2012.

Shortly after, I received my Reiki Level I, so that I could to perform Reiki self-healing and continue to release the emotional baggage that had been built up within me over the years. I was no longer going to allow my body-mind-spirit to be an emotional dumping ground and wanted to learn how to protect myself from all of the energy vampires of the world.

6 years later, I feel almost unrecognizable. Not so much physically, but emotionally, from the inside out. An amazing transformation has taken place. It is wonderful now to live with such peace and harmony within myself, exactly what I had set out for all those years ago.

Now that I have shared with you my personal Reiki experience, let me share further with you an introduction to what Reiki is.

Reiki (pronounced Ray-key), is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is based on the idea that an unseen life force energy flows through us and causes us to be alive. If one’s life force energy is low(also known as chi or prana), then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of feeling happy and healthy. It is a simple, natural and safe method of healing.

What to expect at a Reiki session

You relax, fully clothed, on a chair or massage table while the practitioner holds her hands on or above you. There are a series of hand positions employed, but there is no pressure applied on the body, making it ideal for treating all ages and conditions. The energy flows wherever it is required and can be described as a warm or tingling sensation. A treatment can last 30 minutes to an hour, based on the needs of the client. Receiving a Reiki treatment is a very relaxing and soothing experience, which will leave you feeling refreshed and balanced.

The Ayurvedic sages teach that the path to perfect health is learning to maintain balance, in the mind and spirit as well as in the body. In our ever-changing, fast paced world, it is easy to become severely out of balance.  I use Reiki healing in my everyday life, which allows for stress to stay at a minimum, my energies balanced, my chakras aligned and to help me feel my very best.

Take a few minutes to ask yourself where you're out of balance and how you can restore your natural equilibrium.
