How Meditation Completely Changed My Life

November 4, 2017

How can creating a meditation practice change your life? Well, first let me tell you how it changed mine...

I was raised with the belief system (a pattern that was a learned behavior) that we must be busy all of the time and if we weren't, it meant that we were being lazy. Lazy was not something that was acceptable. So, being like anybody else, I became a creature of habit and it was GO, GO, GO 24/7.

I first must tell you that being a mother of 4 children - with twins being that last born into our family - most of the time I had no choice but to be busy, especially when they started all of their activities. From hockey practice to dance lessons, volleyball to figure skating, swim club to baseball, lacrosse...the list goes on! Then, as busy moms do, we must find time to cook, clean, pay the bills, grocery shop - with our endless to do list in hand - where is one to find time to meditate??

So here's the thing...I didn't. And here is what happened... I would be going along just fine (or so I thought) for a certain amount of time...and then the dreaded meltdown would happen!!

I would end up sick, mostly out of shear exhaustion & I would vow that I would take better care of myself, but only to do it all over again. It was a cycle that I just couldn't seem to escape! I'd let my body get into a run-down state, stressed to the max for that never ending to-do list never seemed to get done!

Until one day...I said "NO MORE!"

I made a vow to myself that I wasn't going to live stressed out anymore. I wanted to feel calm and at peace and have more enjoyment out of everyday things. I knew I had to make myself a priority before everything came crashing down on me, like it did my mother.

I began to read books and listen to pod-casts to teach myself how to get healthier. Everything seemed to be pointing in the direction of MEDITATION and being more mindful, whatever that meant?? I remember thinking to myself, how in the heck am I going to do this?? Having a quiet mind was completely foreign to me and the thought of just sitting there doing nothing kind of freaked me out, but I tried it anyways.

"Meditation is about much more than sitting still like a statue. We need to enquire, be curious, in the mind, others and the world around us."

At first, I was really bad at it. My thoughts would race, going over my to-do list in my head, feeling like I was wasting my time and should be doing something more PRODUCTIVE. But like with anything in time...I practiced...and I got better. And better. And better.

With a calm clear mind, the grip of stress loosens.

Here are some of the benefits I received and still do to this day:

~ my anxiety slowly drifted away and I felt less stressed

~ I felt more grounded, centered and focused

~ I was happier and was amazingly able to remain calm in many situations that would've sent me into a tail spin prior to starting my meditation practice

~ It allowed me to reclaim control over my thoughts and I actually became more productive

~ Taking that time for myself allowed me to get to know myself better and created a self-awareness that I had never know before

~ I began to love and appreciate my self more. I learned that self-love and self-care helped me to be more present with my family and friends, in which I gained stronger relationships

~ I was able to practice forgiveness on a deeper level and let go of things that I realized were not serving me to my highest good

~ Definitely healthier with a stronger immune system

With a calm clear mind, the grip of stress loosens.

Being busy all of the time left me feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and unhealthy.

So, I decided for my life to change, I must change. I am so glad I did.

Life is good.

If you are reading this and you want to learn more about starting your own meditation practice, feel free to reach out to me. You don't have to mediate for hours a day, start with 5 minutes, then work your way up. I usually start my day with a 10 minute meditation using The Daily Calm app. It can be done first thing in the morning (my fav time), at bedtime, or anytime you feel stressed or out of sorts, whenever really. Start today, have patience, you'll be glad you did :)

Cheers to a happier, healthier version of you <3
